Do spring outdoor entertaining your neighbors will talk about

Spring Into Style
Seasonal Entertaining Tips For Today's Homeowners
by Shannon Langan, Style And Design Editor

Spring is here, the birds are singing, and the sun is starting to stick around for progressively longer periods of time. It is during this highly anticipated season that we are offered a unique chance to enjoy nature without any bugs, wrapped in the comfort of delightfully warm days and crisp, cool evenings.

Spring is the time we can finally get out and set our patios in order, long before the regular lawn maintenance and gardening chores begin. It is the perfect opportunity to get caught up in warm weather excitement and the glorious anticipation of our first outdoor party. After all, spring is full of fresh ideas for outdoor entertaining, and presents us with a multitude of interesting hosting options. So in the spirit of the new season, let’s get out and enjoy!

It's spring - time to get out onto the patio for a party!

Personally, I am a patio hound. Each and every possible second I can spend soaking up the last rays of daylight while sipping a glass of wine and chatting with friends is another small slice of paradise for me. But entertaining on my patio in the spring is very different from entertaining during any other season. There are different weather considerations, different decor choices, and, of course, different menu items!

So what are some of these “very spring” entertaining and decorating ideas and how can you use them to enhance your spring festivities? Let’s find out!

Spring Colors

Spring is a time to lighten and brighten. With winter behind us, we need to shed the warm colors that kept us cozy during those long cold months, and replace them with their more optimistic opposites. Soft is where it’s at, and lavender, periwinkle and mauve are some of my favorite ‘it’ choices for patio pick-me-ups. If you aren’t a periwinkle person, powder blues are always a fresh choice, especially when mixed with browns. Use colors which are bright but soft, such as rich yellow or a soft version of lime green, and don’t be afraid to mix in a really vibrant color every so often to make a bold spring statement. As always, luscious chocolate browns, luxurious creams, and brilliant whites are always safe choices to pair with bright colors, and continue to maintain their status as “best supporting neutrals” in many outdoor color palettes.

To apply color successfully, a safe strategy is to pair bright colors with calm-toned selections to provide a sense of balance and harmony in your space. If balancing colors isn’t your forte, don’t fret. Just avoid adding color to everything, as it will likely turn out to be visually overwhelming, and keep major elements neutral to make accessories ‘pop’. Save bright colors for decorative yard accents, patio planters, centerpieces, napkins, dishes, blankets and throw-pillows.

Spring Comfort

Because spring weather can be unpredictable, make sure you take extra precautions to ensure your guests will be comfortable even if the climate is inclement.

  • Make a cool evening into a cozy retreat by layering seating areas with extra cushions and warm blankets.
  • Have a basket of extra-warm, large-enough-to-fit-over-shoe type slippers handy to help keep people’s toes toasty.
  • Battle sudden low-temperature swings by lighting up an outdoor fire-pit, charging up a patio-heater (available at most big-box home renovation stores), or bringing out portable heating units.
  • Add ambience and keep rain and windy weather at bay by setting up a canopy or dining tent (if space allows) with weather protection.
  • Spring Accents

Liven it up with some contemporary planters

Now that the snow is gone it’s time to liven things up with bright accents and optimistic objects. A few of this year’s favorites:

  • Miniature metal pails in vibrant spring colors (available at www.bucket-outlet.com). They look great with a votive candle inside, as mini centerpieces holding one or two large flower blooms, or as starter containers for early spring planting.
  • Punchy yet contemporary spring planters. The Neometrics Concave Pedestal Planters (www.plantcontainers.com) in olive or orange liven up any outdoor space, and the Black & Jade Planters (www.horchow.com) make a bold statement of style.
  • Flirty outdoor curtains in sheer fabrics. These curtains look great when draped around the perimeter of large outdoor dining tents, tied to an in-ground post as part of an “open-air” privacy screen, or when hanging from an outdoor canopy. If you make sure the curtains can be easily taken down and put up (think snaps or Velcro attachments), you can use almost any fabrics you like, without the fear of bad weather ruining them. Try something in a rich yellow, flirty red or iridescent lime to really add drama and punch to a space. For more subdued tastes, try a bright crisp white or ivory to keep the space light and fresh. Some favorites of mine: crinkle sheer in Ivory or Celadon Green and embroidered shimmer organza in Floral Cinnabar Red, Vines Pale Gold, or Nice White (www.fabric.com).
  • Throw pillows in enticing spring colors to add comfort and pizzazz to a seating area. A double-sided cushion with a bold pattern or stripe on one side and a stable solid on the other is a great way to add flexibility to an outdoor space without a lot of added cost. More than one pillow, layered so multiple coordinating colors and textures are visible will add dynamism and depth to an otherwise flat area. A few indulgent options for this spring are Waverly Sun ‘n Shade Beach Umbrella Popsicle and Sumatra Shade Tan (www.fabric.com), MiniDisco Seaglass, Deckstripe Creamsicle, Natural Linen, IsleDamaskCitrine, LannieDot04 and LanfordMaiTai (www.outdoorfabrics.com), Pagetville Sunblue (www.decoratingfabric.com), and Pipipi Shells in Poi (www.perennialsfabrics.com).
  • Waverly Sun ‘n Shade Beach Umbrella Popsicle Pipipi Shells - Poi

    MiniDisco Seaglass Deckstripe Creamsicle
    Natural Linen LannieDot04 - Natural / Beige
Padgetville - Sunblue LanfordMaiTai - Mai Tai

  • Outdoor lighting to bring it to life. Nothing says fun like a great set of patio lanterns and the Smith & Hawken Lantern String Lights (Set of 10 – www.target.com) offer a stylish way to light up any evening event. For a totally different take on walkway or ground lighting, a set of floral outdoor lamps in charming wilting stem shapes and vivid colors (www.horchow.com) are a great way to guide your guests to the party zone.
  • To sum it all up, when it comes to throwing an early-season spring party, the biggest things to remember are to plan for the weather, keep things light, and most importantly, enjoy being outside! If you can do that, every party you throw will be a guaranteed success and you will be able to bask in the afterglow of a job well done.

So until next time, have fun and happy spring entertaining!
