Angelique Tulip
Tulipa ‘Angelique’
Tulips are some of the most wonderful of the perennial spring-blooming flowers we can invite into our northern gardens. They are reliable performers, they are easy to grow, they flower in an enormous range of colors and flower forms, and they kick off the spring performance, only to fade away in summer and allow other perennials to step in and take center stage.
One of the hottest flower colors these days is neon pink, a brash color with overtones of cherry red and almost a glowing iridescence. There aren’t many dependable perennials around that can absolutely blanket a space with this brilliant color and little else, but Angelique tulip is certainly one of them. Not a shy wallflower by any measure, this daring hottie isn’t afraid to scream out for attention. Use this variety in mass plantings to bring a degree of shocking color to a sunny spring garden, an audacious opening act for the hot summer to come.
Tulips require foresight and some planning ahead to be enjoyed in your garden. The bulbs must be planted in mid-fall while the ground is still warm but with the autumn chill already in the air. As a rule, they should be planted 4-6” deep in good garden soil and watered well. Once established, they require little maintenance and will return again for many springs to come. They are most effective when interplanted with later summer and fall-blooming perennials for a powerful season-long performance.
